2008 Grand Opening Specials

Gracious, Elegant Historic Mansion & Estate
Early last century, hosting “Anne of Green Gables” author, L. M. Montgomery

“The most beautiful home on Prince Edward Island”

... a quote from a guest, relocating from Vancouver to his birthplace, Prince Edward Island.

Providing warm hospitality in one of the province’s most venerable homes, BLACK FOX MANOR is nonpareil. Well positioned in the eastern-south shore region, considered one of the island’s greenest and most beautiful, you’ll enjoy convenient access to our provincial capital, Charlottetown. On a pastoral hillside with commanding, idyllic views, the heritage estate offers unbeatable value with 2008 Grand Opening Specials in the Great House with rates from $80, including full gourmet breakfasts, perhaps the best value on the island. Guests may request prix fixe lunches and dinners in the BLACK FOX MANOR dining room.

Upstairs, well appointed rooms overlook the lawn’s century linden trees with distant pastoral vistas of the region’s astounding scenery. Nearby panoramas extend across the sea to Nova Scotia. The Northumberland Strait’s shore region is a magnificent setting for property. The nearby waters are the warmest on the island, the warmest north of the Carolinas.

The three story, eight bedroom home was built in 1900. The home is a rare Colonial Queen Anne Victorian Double Dutch Gambrel in an elegant country style that remains essentially original with artisan moldings and woodwork including four hand carved European fireplaces. Much of the interior woodwork remains finished with its original, deep and rich varnish. References of the home occur in several novels written of the island.

From your comfortable old world atmosphere, you enjoy convenient access to the island’s many features. Whether exploring beaches or conducting business in nearby Charlottetown, BLACK FOX MANOR provides your restful, quiet evenings. Your room is furnished with a featherbed and luxurious high thread count bed linens for an ultimate night’s sleep as often commented by guests at breakfast.

Your comfort is ensured with our attention to the details of your visit. Private touring and concierge services are available. We take great pride in your personalized hospitality to guarantee your BLACK FOX MANOR experience, whether an overnight stay, dining, business meeting, or special occasion, exceeds your expectations, that we may count you among our repeat guests. We invite your special requests to personalize your memorable time with us.

BLACK FOX MANOR DINING ROOM: Regional gourmet comfort foods that will exceed your expectations! To begin each day, a full gourmet breakfast is served in the mansion’s formal dining room. Visitors are always welcome and may join overnight guests for breakfasts at $15 per person. ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS: Prince Edward Island is only 224 km (140 miles) long, allowing easy excursions over the gentle, idyllic, rolling hills. From the sophisticated activities of downtown to the tranquil seacoast, there are activities and sights for everyone. Guests enjoy public or secluded beaches, sailing, sea adventures, nature trails, bicycle trails, world-class golf (there are over 20 courses on the island), harness racing, graceful lighthouses, charming seaside villages, carefully cultivated farmlands, waterfront boardwalks, museums, theatre, summer playhouses, fine dining, fine art galleries, historic sites and heritage tours, horse-drawn carriage rides, public gardens, amusement parks, Anne of Green Gables attractions, boutiques, cafes/coffeehouses, farm markets, artisan galleries, year-round festivals include the largest Maritime winter festival, traditional music, ceilidhs, and open air concerts. Both English and French are widely spoken.

WEATHER: Summer is comfortably warm with consistent island breezes. Swimming is fantastic. Our favored, sheltered location in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and our fortunate warm Gulf Stream creates the warmest ocean water north of the Carolinas along the uncrowded Northumberland Strait beaches. You’ll be comfortable in short sleeves during the day, with a cotton sweater for evening.

Autumn is long and warm. The rolling hills covered in brilliant foliage are overwhelming upon the first experience. Golf courses and restaurants are less crowded than in summer, but the weather is often as pleasant.

Winter is moderately cold with snow. The Confederation Trail which covers the length of the island and hosts bicyclists and hikers in warmer weather is now turned over to snowmobilers. PEI does winter well. The historic towns and villages turn indoors for music. Enjoy the magical winter landscape from your warm and comfortable dining room enjoying freshly prepared homemade meals.

Spring is variable. Layers of clothing ensure your comfort.

LOCATION: Enter or paste “162 Newtown Rd, Queens, PE” in your browser window for a Google Map.

We are easy to find. We are 1 km from the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy. 1) on Route 211, We are located halfway en route between the Nova Scotia Ferries and Charlottetown, 15 to 20 minutes from each. The turn off from the Trans Canada Highway is announced by Provincial Highway Blue Tourist Information Signs, “BLACK FOX MANOR, 1 km.”

We are on the south shore of Queens County, the central county of PEI, east of Charlottetown and a short distance west of the Point Prim peninsula, home of PEI’s oldest lighthouse. This lower shore location and proximity to the provincial capital city offer a perfect home base for enjoying the island. Minutes away are multiple visual, cultural, artistic and sporting activities and attractions. The estate is located in the most pristine rural region, quiet and peaceful. The furthest reaches of the island are an easy day trip.

At the Provincial Highway sign “Black Fox Manor B&B,” turn right onto Route 211. Black Fox Manor is on your right at the top of the hill.
Note: Check ferry schedules. If visiting outside ferry season, follow Confederation Bridge directions from New Brunswick, below.

By car from NEW BRUNSWICK; The most direct route is the Confederation Bridge and continuing to Charlottetown. See directions from Charlottetown, following. For an alternative, more scenic route, travel east across Nova Scotia to cross the Northumberland Strait by ferry. This route is only an option during seasonal ferry service. See directions from Nova Scotia, above.

By car from CHARLOTTETOWN; Cross the Hillsborough Bridge and follow the Trans Canada Highway (Route 1), east toward the Nova Scotia Ferries (Wood Islands, PEI) for approximately 20 minutes to Route 211. A note from your host:
The island province reminds us of the sleepy agricultural Sonoma County, California of half a century ago. The relaxed pace, wholesome communities and rolling green hills, descending to a gentle sea, all contribute to this feeling.

Last week, as we walked along a country road to a nearby beach, several young foxes appeared from under the wild rose thickets rising from the road’s edge. The foxes played nonchalantly as we passed. The rose fragrance mixed in the gentle sea breeze. A short way further on the red clay road with views across the water to Nova Scotia, is the island’s oldest lighthouse, the beautiful and austere Point Prim Lighthouse.

Later in the week, Billy Martin, a lifelong resident of the island and descendant of the original residents of BLACK FOX MANOR, dropped in for a visit. Billy, now eighty, assured us we would never be sorry we chose to live on this island. His family’s long history provides Billy with many stories of the great kindness and character of the people who call this place, Canada’s smallest, most beautiful island province, home.

It is our sincere desire that BLACK FOX MANOR hospitality offered you will create your treasured memories of this truly enchanted place.

If we can be of assistance in planning your island experience, please contact me personally.

Yours truly,

Brad Potter

HONORING LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S
VIITS TO Black fox manor

”ANNE of green gables, 1908” 2008 CENTENARY BRUNCHES & DINNERS

$15 Prix fixe, Summer-Autumn, 2008, BLACK FOX MANOR will host fine dining experiences to celebrate the centenary of Anne of Green Gables. The celebrated book was first published in 1908. BLACK FOX MANOR was an important home in Ms. Montgomery’s time. Heritage archives reference her staying in the home when visiting Sir Andrew MacPhail who lived in nearby Orwell.

One hundred years ago, only the most fortunate homes had lawns ornamented with lovely linden trees, imported from Europe, usually planted in pairs. Ms. Montgomery may have enjoyed the young trees from the BLACK FOX MANOR dining room windows. These trees were not much more than a quarter century old at that time. Today, they are majestic, with girths exceeding twenty feet, with full heads towering high above the three storied rooftops.

Join us in the home’s original dining room for a delicious re-creation of an early century meal. By reservation, please, 902 659-2988.
